About Large Dog Beds
You know the look of a big dog on a bed that's too small: back legs on the floor, chin hanging off the edge, never quite settled. Plenty of beds sold as large are large for a spaniel. This large dog bed collection gathers beds with sizes for labradors, shepherds, retrievers and bigger, most of them listed in centimetres so you can check before you order; where a page gives no measurements, ask us first.
Large dog beds by how they sleep
Size gets them onto the bed. Shape decides whether they stay there.
- If they sprawl flat out on their side, they want no walls in the way. Buttermere gives them 110 × 85cm of memory foam with no walls at all, 10cm deep. Wastwater is 127 × 91cm, with a raised head built into the foam.
- If they lean with their back against the sofa, they want bolsters. Staveley and Melbreak are both 122 × 89cm, with three bolstered sides and an open front.
- If they curl and tuck in, they want something on every side. Borrowdale is bolstered on all four sides over memory foam, with a waterproof inner liner under the cover.
Why a big dog needs more underneath
A heavy dog puts a lot of weight through hips, shoulders and elbows. Loose fibre filling shifts away from those points and packs down; foam spreads the load and keeps its shape. That's why most beds here are foam: memory foam, crumb memory foam, gel memory foam or profiled egg-crate foam, sometimes two layers together. Depth counts as well: Ennerdale is 24cm deep. Others are soft-filled by design, such as Troutbeck at 110 × 75cm. Most product pages say which kind of filling they use; where one does not, ask us before ordering. Sizing a large dog bed
Measure your dog lying on their side, nose to base of tail, and add 15 to 20cm. Then check whether the bed's size is an outside measurement. Bolsters take up part of the footprint, so a bolstered bed needs more allowance than an open mattress. Between sizes, size up, or message us their breed and weight and we will tell you honestly which one fits. If they're slowing down
A stiff dog often hesitates at the edge of a high-walled bed. Open fronts like Staveley's and Melbreak's, or a flat mattress like Buttermere, leave nothing to climb, and our orthopaedic dog beds include more low-entry shapes. A bed is for comfort, not treatment; if your dog is in pain or struggling to get up, keep talking to your vet.

Large dog bed questions
What size bed does a labrador need?
Measure your own dog rather than going by breed: their length lying on their side, plus 15 to 20cm, compared with the usable area. Some beds list breeds by size, such as Patterdale's Large for golden retrievers, labradors and German shepherds. Treat that as a starting point.
Can I wash a large dog bed?
Most have removable covers; follow each sewn-in label and never wash or soak the foam. The Windermere and Bassenthwaite mesh beds have no cover at all and simply rinse down.

How do I know which size to get?
Measure nose to base of tail while they are lying down, then add 15–20cm. Where a dog falls between two sizes, go up: sprawlers need the length more than you would think. Every product page has a size guide built from that bed's own measurements, with breed examples.
What does 50kg/m³ actually mean?
It is how much foam is packed into every cubic metre. Density and firmness are not the same thing: a low-density foam can feel firm on day one and still collapse by month six. High-density foam keeps its structure under repeated weight, which is why a 50kg/m³ core is still supporting hips and elbows years later.
You'll find it in the orthopaedic beds. The fibre-filled nest beds are built for softness instead, and each product page says which is which.
Can I actually wash it?
On most of the range, yes: properly, not just spot-clean. Covers zip off and go straight in the machine at 30°C, and on the orthopaedic beds a waterproof inner liner keeps wet coats, muddy paws and accidents away from the foam.
One exception worth knowing before you buy: waterproof-fabric beds are wiped clean rather than washed with detergent, because detergent strips the coating off the fabric. Every product page says which applies.
How quickly will it arrive?
Orders go out on working days, tracked from the moment they leave us. Order by 3pm on a dispatch day and it goes the same day; most then arrive within 1–3 working days. Tracking comes by email as soon as it's on its way.

What if my dog just won't use it?
Then it comes back. Let your dog sleep on it for up to 100 nights. If it isn't right, we collect it free and refund every penny. Just tell us inside that window. It doesn't need to be unused: send it back slept-on, hair and all. Full terms are in our returns policy.
What does the 5-year guarantee cover?
The foam. Every memory foam bed carries a 5-year guarantee on its core: if it loses its structure under normal use in that time, which is the failure that ends most dog beds, we'll replace it. Covers, zips and liners are wearing parts and sit outside it, and the fibre-filled nest beds are built for softness rather than covered by the foam guarantee. Full terms are in our returns policy.
Will it help a dog with arthritis or stiff hips?
A supportive bed spreads their weight so pressure isn't concentrated on hips, elbows and shoulders, which is what makes lying down and getting back up harder for a dog with joint wear. But a bed is not a treatment and it won't replace veterinary care, so please keep talking to your vet. What it can change is the surface they spend twelve to fourteen hours a day on.
