About Dog Mattresses & Flat Beds

A dog mattress is for the sprawler: the dog who lies flat on their side, legs out, diagonally across the rug, and on a walled bed ends up with back legs on the floor and head jammed into a corner. Take the walls away and nearly every centimetre is somewhere they can lie, and they can step on from any side, at any age.

Which dog mattress for which dog

  • If they are a big side sleeper who needs support: memory foam. Buttermere is 110 × 85cm and 10cm deep. Ambleside layers memory foam over a firmer base right to all four edges, up to 140 × 100cm. Wastwater is 127 × 91cm with a raised head built into the foam.
  • If they want soft: Hawkshead (faux fur) and Seathwaite (sherpa) are open pillow mattresses filled with virgin fibre, 100 × 65cm or 120 × 80cm and 20cm deep, with leather handles to carry them to wherever the warm spot is tonight.
  • If they want fur on top and foam below: Patterdale puts a faux-fur sleeping surface over a foam core, in brown herringbone tweed.
  • If they curl one night and sprawl the next: Duddon is an 80 × 80cm square for dogs who sleep diagonally, teddy fleece on one face and canvas on the other.
  • If it is for a crate or wet walks: Glenridding is a quilted crate mattress with low padded sides; Wasdale's green outer fabric is itself the waterproof layer.

Runs hot, or always ends up on the tiles? A raised mesh deck may suit them better than any mattress: see our elevated and cooling dog beds.

What decides whether a flat bed lasts

A mattress has nowhere to hide a thin spot. On a thin foam sheet a dog lying near the edge sinks through to the floor and shuffles back to the middle. Foam that runs edge to edge, or two layers doing different jobs, is what stops that. Buttermere, Ambleside and Wastwater also carry a 5-year no-flatten guarantee on the foam core, subject to the guarantee terms. Fibre mattresses are deliberately softer; choose them for comfort rather than support. For a dog in pain or recovering, keep talking to your vet about the right resting surface.

Measuring for a mattress

Easier than for any other bed. Measure your dog lying on their side, nose to base of tail, and add 15 to 20cm. Most of these have no bolsters to allow for, so the listed size is close to the size they get. For a crate, measure the inside of the crate base and choose the size that lies flat without bunching or blocking the door.

100 nights to stretch out on it

Whether they use the whole surface is easy to see once it is down, and you have plenty of time to watch. Every mattress here comes with a 100-night trial from delivery. If it is not right, we arrange free UK mainland collection and a full refund (one trial per household; damage and other exclusions apply). Standard UK delivery is free on orders over £40. The trial page explains how it works.

Dog mattress questions

Is a flat dog mattress a good choice for an older dog?

It removes the climb, which matters for a stiff dog. Choose foam rather than fibre if they need support, and see our orthopaedic dog beds for more shapes with low or open entries.

Can a dog mattress go in a crate?

Yes, if it lies flat. Glenridding comes in 70 × 50cm, 90 × 60cm and 105 × 70cm to compare with your crate base. Our crate and travel beds include wipe-clean options.

How do I wash a dog mattress?

Unzip the cover and follow its sewn-in label (several wash at 30°C), and keep the foam out of the machine. Wasdale's waterproof outer is wiped for everyday marks; check the label before washing its covers.

The 100-night trial

Try it for 100 nights.
At our risk, not yours.

Tell us how they get on. If it isn't right, we collect it free and refund every penny.

  1. Night 1

    It arrives

Put it where they already sleep, with a blanket that smells of home on top.

  2. Night 30

    Give them time

Plenty of dogs claim a new bed the first evening. Some take a fortnight and a familiar blanket on top. Both are normal.

  3. Night 100

    Not right? Tell us

Any time inside the 100 nights. If it isn't right, we collect it free and refund every penny.

It doesn't need to be unused. Send it back slept-on, hair and all.

Every memory foam bed also carries the 5-year foam guarantee.

Before you decide

The questions we get asked most.

Something we haven't covered? Ask us

How do I know which size to get?

Measure nose to base of tail while they are lying down, then add 15–20cm. Where a dog falls between two sizes, go up: sprawlers need the length more than you would think. Every product page has a size guide built from that bed's own measurements, with breed examples.

What does 50kg/m³ actually mean?

It is how much foam is packed into every cubic metre. Density and firmness are not the same thing: a low-density foam can feel firm on day one and still collapse by month six. High-density foam keeps its structure under repeated weight, which is why a 50kg/m³ core is still supporting hips and elbows years later.

You'll find it in the orthopaedic beds. The fibre-filled nest beds are built for softness instead, and each product page says which is which.

Can I actually wash it?

On most of the range, yes: properly, not just spot-clean. Covers zip off and go straight in the machine at 30°C, and on the orthopaedic beds a waterproof inner liner keeps wet coats, muddy paws and accidents away from the foam.

One exception worth knowing before you buy: waterproof-fabric beds are wiped clean rather than washed with detergent, because detergent strips the coating off the fabric. Every product page says which applies.

How quickly will it arrive?

Orders go out on working days, tracked from the moment they leave us. Order by 3pm on a dispatch day and it goes the same day; most then arrive within 1–3 working days. Tracking comes by email as soon as it's on its way.

Delivery is free on UK orders over £40. Below that, the delivery charge is shown at checkout before you pay.

What if my dog just won't use it?

Then it comes back. Let your dog sleep on it for up to 100 nights. If it isn't right, we collect it free and refund every penny. Just tell us inside that window. It doesn't need to be unused: send it back slept-on, hair and all. Full terms are in our returns policy.

What does the 5-year guarantee cover?

The foam. Every memory foam bed carries a 5-year guarantee on its core: if it loses its structure under normal use in that time, which is the failure that ends most dog beds, we'll replace it. Covers, zips and liners are wearing parts and sit outside it, and the fibre-filled nest beds are built for softness rather than covered by the foam guarantee. Full terms are in our returns policy.

Will it help a dog with arthritis or stiff hips?

A supportive bed spreads their weight so pressure isn't concentrated on hips, elbows and shoulders, which is what makes lying down and getting back up harder for a dog with joint wear. But a bed is not a treatment and it won't replace veterinary care, so please keep talking to your vet. What it can change is the surface they spend twelve to fourteen hours a day on.
