About Waterproof Dog Beds
A waterproof dog bed is for the walk that ends the same way every time: a soaked dog through the door, a quick go with the towel, and straight onto their bed before you can stop them. On fleece or plush, that means a damp bed, a wash cycle and a day of drying. On a coated outer, it means a damp cloth, and the bed is back in use.
Outer coating or inner liner: two kinds of waterproof dog bed
The beds in this collection deal with mess on the outside. Wasdale's green outer fabric is itself the waterproof layer, and the Crummock Waterproof Nest, Ribble and Derwent have coated, wipe-clean outers, so mud, drool and wet paws stay on the surface and come off with a cloth. That is different from a waterproof inner liner, which sits hidden between a washable cover and the foam to protect the core from accidents. If foam support matters more than a wipe-clean surface, beds such as Coniston, Borrowdale and Scafell have liners inside; you will find them among our orthopaedic dog beds.
Choosing by how they sleep, and where
- If they sprawl: Wasdale has no raised sides, a filled support layer, leather handles and a non-slip base, at 75 × 55cm or 95 × 75cm.
- If they curl: the Crummock Waterproof Nest keeps high walls on every side over a cushioned base, at 65 × 45cm, 70 × 55cm or 90 × 70cm. It is a nest, not a firm foam mattress.
- If they lean, in a crate: Ribble puts bolstered sides into a crate-shaped bed, in four sizes from 70 × 55cm to 105 × 75cm.
- If it is for the boot or a crate floor: Derwent is a low-profile mat at 60 × 45cm, 75 × 55cm or 90 × 65cm.
Looking after a coated bed
Wipe the outer for everyday marks; Derwent wipes down with a damp cloth and mild soap. Before you machine-wash any removable cover, check the sewn-in label, because detergent and machine washing can affect some waterproof finishes, and do not machine-wash Derwent unless its label expressly permits it. Let everything dry before it goes back down. Our care guide has the full routine. In the car, a bed is a comfort accessory, not a vehicle restraint, so use a proper restraint as well.
Give it a wet season: the 100-night trial
Every bed here comes with the 100-night trial from delivery, and should it not suit them, we arrange free UK mainland collection and a full refund, one trial per household, with damage and other exclusions applying. Standard UK delivery is free on orders over £40.
Waterproof dog bed questions
Is a waterproof dog bed a good idea for a puppy or an older dog?
The Crummock Waterproof Nest is made for curled-up sleepers with muddy hobbies, puppies, and older dogs who have the occasional accident: everyday marks wipe off between proper washes. For a foam bed protected from the inside, choose one with a waterproof liner. If accidents are new for an older dog, mention them to your vet.
Can I machine wash a waterproof dog bed?
Check the label first. Some covers can be washed, but detergent and machine washing can affect waterproof finishes, so wiping is the everyday routine. If you would rather wash than wipe, see our washable dog beds.
Which one works in a crate?
Ribble and Derwent, measured against the inside of the crate base so they lie flat without bunching or blocking the door. Our crate and travel beds include a quilted option too.

Before you decide
The questions we get asked most.
Something we haven't covered? Ask us
How do I know which size to get?
Measure nose to base of tail while they are lying down, then add 15–20cm. Where a dog falls between two sizes, go up: sprawlers need the length more than you would think. Every product page has a size guide built from that bed's own measurements, with breed examples.
What does 50kg/m³ actually mean?
It is how much foam is packed into every cubic metre. Density and firmness are not the same thing: a low-density foam can feel firm on day one and still collapse by month six. High-density foam keeps its structure under repeated weight, which is why a 50kg/m³ core is still supporting hips and elbows years later.
You'll find it in the orthopaedic beds. The fibre-filled nest beds are built for softness instead, and each product page says which is which.
Can I actually wash it?
On most of the range, yes: properly, not just spot-clean. Covers zip off and go straight in the machine at 30°C, and on the orthopaedic beds a waterproof inner liner keeps wet coats, muddy paws and accidents away from the foam.
One exception worth knowing before you buy: waterproof-fabric beds are wiped clean rather than washed with detergent, because detergent strips the coating off the fabric. Every product page says which applies.
How quickly will it arrive?
Orders go out on working days, tracked from the moment they leave us. Order by 3pm on a dispatch day and it goes the same day; most then arrive within 1–3 working days. Tracking comes by email as soon as it's on its way.
Delivery is free on UK orders over £40. Below that, the delivery charge is shown at checkout before you pay.
What if my dog just won't use it?
Then it comes back. Let your dog sleep on it for up to 100 nights. If it isn't right, we collect it free and refund every penny. Just tell us inside that window. It doesn't need to be unused: send it back slept-on, hair and all. Full terms are in our returns policy.
What does the 5-year guarantee cover?
The foam. Every memory foam bed carries a 5-year guarantee on its core: if it loses its structure under normal use in that time, which is the failure that ends most dog beds, we'll replace it. Covers, zips and liners are wearing parts and sit outside it, and the fibre-filled nest beds are built for softness rather than covered by the foam guarantee. Full terms are in our returns policy.
Will it help a dog with arthritis or stiff hips?
A supportive bed spreads their weight so pressure isn't concentrated on hips, elbows and shoulders, which is what makes lying down and getting back up harder for a dog with joint wear. But a bed is not a treatment and it won't replace veterinary care, so please keep talking to your vet. What it can change is the surface they spend twelve to fourteen hours a day on.
