About Elevated & Cooling Dog Beds

An elevated dog bed is for the dog who seeks out the coolest floor in the house: flat out on the kitchen tiles in summer, sprawled across the utility room flagstones, moving to a fresh patch when the old one warms up. A raised frame with a taut mesh deck gives them a surface with air on both sides. That is the whole idea behind the mesh beds here: no gel, no batteries, nothing inside to leak or run flat.

How an elevated or cooling dog bed works

On a solid bed or a floor, warmth builds up between the dog and the surface. Lift the deck clear and air moves underneath, so warm air moves away instead of collecting beneath them. The mesh is pulled taut, so it takes their weight evenly across the deck. The same lift helps in winter: on cold tiles or a damp utility floor, a raised deck keeps them off the coldest surface in the house, with a blanket laid on top. One honest limit: a raised bed, canopy or kennel does not prevent overheating. In hot weather they still need drinking water, safe shade, and to come indoors in extreme heat.

Choosing between the frames

  • If they sprawl and come home muddy: Bassenthwaite, a metal frame and breathable mesh at 90 × 70cm, 110 × 80cm or 130 × 90cm, with no foam or filling to go soggy after a wet walk. Rinse it down and let it dry.
  • If they sprawl and you want it all year: Windermere, a steel frame and taut mesh deck at the same three footprints. Lay a blanket on top for the cold months and take it off when the heat comes back. There is no cover to unzip.
  • If they lean: Brotherswater, with bolsters on three sides around a 150 × 95cm deck, a powder-coated steel frame, non-slip rubber feet and snap-together assembly with no tools.
  • If you want a lounger for the patio: Henley and Torver are woven day beds with a canopy and an included cushion, for supervised lounging on a patio or in a conservatory. They are not all-weather shelter; for kennels with raised floors, see our outdoor dog houses.

Who they suit

Hot sleepers, thick-coated breeds, muddy dogs and homes with hard floors. A taut mesh deck feels firm, so a dog who likes to sink into something soft may prefer it with a blanket on top, or a soft dog mattress instead. For size, go by their length lying on their side plus 15 to 20cm, as you would for any flat bed.

Trial and returns: two sets of terms here

Windermere, Bassenthwaite and Brotherswater come with the 100-night trial from delivery, long enough to see how they use it as the weather changes: if it is not right, we arrange free UK mainland collection and a full refund (one trial per household; damage and other exclusions apply). Henley and Torver are outdoor day beds, so they have a 30-day change-of-mind window, with return at your cost, not the 100-night sleep trial. Your statutory rights are unaffected. Standard UK delivery is free on orders over £40. Delivery and returns in full.

Elevated dog bed questions

Does a cooling dog bed stop a dog overheating?

No bed can promise that. A raised mesh deck lets air move underneath so heat does not build up beneath them, but on hot days they still need water, shade and, in extreme heat, to come inside.

Can an elevated dog bed go outside?

Windermere, Bassenthwaite and Brotherswater are made for the garden in summer as well as indoors, and Bassenthwaite can simply be rinsed down. Henley and Torver are for supervised lounging in suitable weather; store their cushions under cover.

How do I clean a raised mesh bed?

Wipe or rinse the mesh and frame and let it dry fully. Keep it on a level surface and check the frame joints occasionally.

The 100-night trial

Try it for 100 nights.
At our risk, not yours.

Tell us how they get on. If it isn't right, we collect it free and refund every penny.

  1. Night 1

    It arrives

Put it where they already sleep, with a blanket that smells of home on top.

  2. Night 30

    Give them time

Plenty of dogs claim a new bed the first evening. Some take a fortnight and a familiar blanket on top. Both are normal.

  3. Night 100

    Not right? Tell us

Any time inside the 100 nights. If it isn't right, we collect it free and refund every penny.

It doesn't need to be unused. Send it back slept-on, hair and all.

Every memory foam bed also carries the 5-year foam guarantee.

Before you decide

The questions we get asked most.

Something we haven't covered? Ask us

How do I know which size to get?

Measure nose to base of tail while they are lying down, then add 15–20cm. Where a dog falls between two sizes, go up: sprawlers need the length more than you would think. Every product page has a size guide built from that bed's own measurements, with breed examples.

What does 50kg/m³ actually mean?

It is how much foam is packed into every cubic metre. Density and firmness are not the same thing: a low-density foam can feel firm on day one and still collapse by month six. High-density foam keeps its structure under repeated weight, which is why a 50kg/m³ core is still supporting hips and elbows years later.

You'll find it in the orthopaedic beds. The fibre-filled nest beds are built for softness instead, and each product page says which is which.

Can I actually wash it?

On most of the range, yes: properly, not just spot-clean. Covers zip off and go straight in the machine at 30°C, and on the orthopaedic beds a waterproof inner liner keeps wet coats, muddy paws and accidents away from the foam.

One exception worth knowing before you buy: waterproof-fabric beds are wiped clean rather than washed with detergent, because detergent strips the coating off the fabric. Every product page says which applies.

How quickly will it arrive?

Orders go out on working days, tracked from the moment they leave us. Order by 3pm on a dispatch day and it goes the same day; most then arrive within 1–3 working days. Tracking comes by email as soon as it's on its way.

Delivery is free on UK orders over £40. Below that, the delivery charge is shown at checkout before you pay.

What if my dog just won't use it?

Then it comes back. Let your dog sleep on it for up to 100 nights. If it isn't right, we collect it free and refund every penny. Just tell us inside that window. It doesn't need to be unused: send it back slept-on, hair and all. Full terms are in our returns policy.

What does the 5-year guarantee cover?

The foam. Every memory foam bed carries a 5-year guarantee on its core: if it loses its structure under normal use in that time, which is the failure that ends most dog beds, we'll replace it. Covers, zips and liners are wearing parts and sit outside it, and the fibre-filled nest beds are built for softness rather than covered by the foam guarantee. Full terms are in our returns policy.

Will it help a dog with arthritis or stiff hips?

A supportive bed spreads their weight so pressure isn't concentrated on hips, elbows and shoulders, which is what makes lying down and getting back up harder for a dog with joint wear. But a bed is not a treatment and it won't replace veterinary care, so please keep talking to your vet. What it can change is the surface they spend twelve to fourteen hours a day on.
