About Small Dog Beds
Watch a small dog settle. They turn, turn again, then press themselves into the smallest space on offer. A small dog bed works when it gives them that edge to tuck against and something soft to burrow into, without being so big that they end up adrift in the middle of it.
Small dog beds by how they settle
- If they burrow and curl, choose walls and a soft middle. Sawrey has a sherpa-pile lining and starts at an XS of 45 × 35cm. Harewood is velvet with a cushioned rim, from 46 × 36cm. Thirlmere has structured felt walls that stay upright when they lean into them. More walled shapes are among our nest and donut dog beds.
- If they rest a chin, choose a rim at the right height. Blea Tarn is cream bouclé with a raised rim, from 60 × 50cm.
- If they need firmer support, often as they get older, choose foam. Chatsworth has a crumb memory foam base and bolster walls. Kendal puts a memory foam core under corduroy, from 45 × 29.5cm.
Sizing a small dog bed
Go by the sleeping area, not the outside. On a nest or bolster bed the walls take up a real share of the footprint: Chatsworth's Small is 55 × 40cm outside but 38 × 27cm inside. Measure your dog curled up as well as stretched out, and if they're between sizes, size up.
One thing to know: this collection includes every bed that comes in a Small or XS, and some of those beds also come much bigger. Ullswater's Small, for example, is 63 × 77cm. Check the centimetres on the size you pick. The size guide has the full method.
What makes a small bed feel right
Walls give them something to press against. A lining such as sherpa, velvet or fleece gives a soft surface the moment they step in. A non-slip base, as on Chatsworth and Loweswater, stops a light bed sliding across a smooth floor when they jump in.
100 nights to settle in
Some small dogs are particular about where they sleep, so there is time to let them decide. Most beds here come with the 100-night sleep trial: within 100 nights, if it isn't right, we arrange free UK mainland collection and a full refund. One trial per household; damage and other exclusions apply. Two exceptions: the Rydal Personalised bed is made to order with your dog's name, so it is excluded from the trial and from change-of-mind returns, and the Whinlatter car seat is a travel accessory, so check its returns terms before ordering. Free standard UK delivery on orders over £40.
Small dog bed questions
Which size for a pug, dachshund or Yorkie?
Some beds name breeds against each size. Elterwater's Small lists pugs, French bulldogs and dachshunds; Kentmere's Small lists Yorkshire terriers, chihuahuas and Pomeranians. Use that as a starting point, then measure your own dog.
Does a small dog need an orthopaedic bed?
Not automatically. Many beds here are soft fibre-filled nests by design. If yours is getting stiffer, foam such as Chatsworth or Kendal gives firmer support, and our beds for older dogs are worth a look. If they seem to be in pain, talk to your vet; a bed is comfort, not treatment.
Can I machine wash a small dog bed?
The covers on Sawrey, Harewood, Blea Tarn and Loweswater unzip and wash at 30°C. Thirlmere's felt structure shouldn't go in the machine. Always follow the sewn-in label.

Before you decide
The questions we get asked most.
Something we haven't covered? Ask us
How do I know which size to get?
Measure nose to base of tail while they are lying down, then add 15–20cm. Where a dog falls between two sizes, go up: sprawlers need the length more than you would think. Every product page has a size guide built from that bed's own measurements, with breed examples.
What does 50kg/m³ actually mean?
It is how much foam is packed into every cubic metre. Density and firmness are not the same thing: a low-density foam can feel firm on day one and still collapse by month six. High-density foam keeps its structure under repeated weight, which is why a 50kg/m³ core is still supporting hips and elbows years later.
You'll find it in the orthopaedic beds. The fibre-filled nest beds are built for softness instead, and each product page says which is which.
Can I actually wash it?
On most of the range, yes: properly, not just spot-clean. Covers zip off and go straight in the machine at 30°C, and on the orthopaedic beds a waterproof inner liner keeps wet coats, muddy paws and accidents away from the foam.
One exception worth knowing before you buy: waterproof-fabric beds are wiped clean rather than washed with detergent, because detergent strips the coating off the fabric. Every product page says which applies.
How quickly will it arrive?
Orders go out on working days, tracked from the moment they leave us. Order by 3pm on a dispatch day and it goes the same day; most then arrive within 1–3 working days. Tracking comes by email as soon as it's on its way.
Delivery is free on UK orders over £40. Below that, the delivery charge is shown at checkout before you pay.
What if my dog just won't use it?
Then it comes back. Let your dog sleep on it for up to 100 nights. If it isn't right, we collect it free and refund every penny. Just tell us inside that window. It doesn't need to be unused: send it back slept-on, hair and all. Full terms are in our returns policy.
What does the 5-year guarantee cover?
The foam. Every memory foam bed carries a 5-year guarantee on its core: if it loses its structure under normal use in that time, which is the failure that ends most dog beds, we'll replace it. Covers, zips and liners are wearing parts and sit outside it, and the fibre-filled nest beds are built for softness rather than covered by the foam guarantee. Full terms are in our returns policy.
Will it help a dog with arthritis or stiff hips?
A supportive bed spreads their weight so pressure isn't concentrated on hips, elbows and shoulders, which is what makes lying down and getting back up harder for a dog with joint wear. But a bed is not a treatment and it won't replace veterinary care, so please keep talking to your vet. What it can change is the surface they spend twelve to fourteen hours a day on.
