The part you cannot see
What 50kg/m³ actually means.
Density is the weight of a cubic metre of foam. It is not the same thing as firmness, which is why a cheap bed can feel reassuringly solid in the shop and still be flat by March. Firmness is how it feels on day one. Density is how much foam is in there to keep feeling that way.
Most dog beds are filled with shredded offcuts or low-density foam, and they bottom out inside a year — at which point your dog is sleeping on the floor with a cover over it. Our orthopaedic cores are 50kg/m³, which is the reason the guarantee is on the foam rather than on the stitching.
This is how the orthopaedic beds are built. The fibre-filled nest beds are made differently, and we say so on the page rather than letting you find out in month three.

Before you decide
The questions we get asked most.
Measure nose to base of tail while they are lying down, then add 15–20cm. Where a dog falls between two sizes, go up: sprawlers need the length more than you would think. Our size and firmness guide has the breed-by-breed detail, and if you still get it wrong the 100-night trial covers it.
It is how much foam is packed into every cubic metre. Density and firmness are not the same thing — a low-density foam can feel firm on day one and still collapse by month six. High-density foam keeps its structure under repeated weight, which is why a 50kg/m³ core is still supporting hips and elbows years later, and why we can put a 5-year guarantee on it. You will find this core in the orthopaedic beds; the fibre-filled nest beds are built for softness instead, and each product page says which is which.
These beds distribute weight so pressure is not concentrated on hips, elbows and shoulders, which is what makes lying down and getting back up harder for a dog with joint wear. A bed is not a treatment and it will not replace veterinary care, so please keep talking to your vet. What it can change is the surface they spend fourteen hours a day on.
On most of the range, yes — properly, not just spot-clean. Covers zip off and go straight in the machine at 30°C, and on the orthopaedic beds a waterproof inner liner keeps wet coats, muddy paws and accidents away from the foam.
One exception worth knowing before you buy: our waterproof-fabric beds are wiped clean rather than washed with detergent, because detergent strips the coating off the fabric. Every product page states which applies to that bed.
