About Bolster Dog Beds
A bolster dog bed is for the dog who never quite lies in the middle of anything. They wedge their back against the skirting board, rest a chin on your shoe, or lie with their spine pressed to the side of the sofa. Leaning is how they switch off, and a bolster gives that habit a place of its own: a raised, cushioned edge built into the bed.
Which bolster dog bed shape suits them
- If they want a chin rest and room to stretch, one edge: Watendlath has a pillow bolster along one side and the rest left open. Nocturne's open-sided bolster suits big dogs who start the evening curled and end it stretched out.
- If they like their back covered and the room in view, two sides: Esthwaite and Bowfell have an L-shaped bolster.
- If they press in but find climbing hard, three sides: Melbreak, Staveley, Martindale and Rosthwaite leave the front open, so there is something to press into and nothing to climb over. Harrogate frames its cushioned base on three sides too.
- If they want an edge whichever way they turn, four sides: Borrowdale, Ullswater and Troutbeck. For full walls round a deep, soft middle, see our nest dog beds.
Look at the sleeping area, not just the footprint
A bolster is part of the bed's outside measurement, so the space they actually lie on is smaller. On the Chatsworth Large, the outside is 70 × 55cm and the sleeping area 50 × 45cm. Measure them lying down, add 15 to 20cm, and hold that number against the space inside the bolsters rather than the outside. If it is close, size up.
Fibre bolsters or foam underneath
Kentmere, Ullswater and Loweswater are fibre-filled and Troutbeck soft-filled: yielding, made for snuggling rather than support. If they are stiffening up, choose foam under the bolsters. Chatsworth has a crumb memory foam base; Borrowdale, Melbreak and Staveley pair memory foam with a waterproof liner; Martindale and Rosthwaite layer memory foam over egg-crate foam. Langdale goes further and builds the rim itself from foam, so it holds a defined edge where a stuffed border would sag. Several of the memory foam beds here carry a 5-year no-flatten guarantee on the foam core, subject to the guarantee terms, and their product pages say so. Comfort is the job, not treatment: if your dog is in pain, keep talking to your vet.
The trial on every bolster bed here
You will only really know it is the right edge once they have used it for a while. Each one comes with 100 nights from delivery. If it turns out to be the wrong edge for them, we arrange free UK mainland collection and a full refund; one trial per household, and damage and other exclusions apply. Standard UK delivery is free on orders over £40. The trial page has the detail.
Bolster bed questions
Is a bolster dog bed good for older dogs?
It can be, if the shape lets them walk in. Look for an open front or low entry and foam underneath; Rosthwaite and Martindale leave the front open so there is nothing to step over. Our beds for older dogs gather more.
Will the bolsters go flat?
Fibre-filled bolsters are soft by design, so expect some give. If a firm edge matters, choose Langdale, whose rim is foam rather than loose filling.
What is the difference between a bolster bed and a dog sofa bed?
Mostly shape. A sofa bed is a bolster bed built to look like furniture, usually with arms and a back. See our dog sofa beds.
Torn between an edge and full walls? The Bed Finder works it out from how they sleep.

Night 1
It arrives
Put it where they already sleep, with a blanket that smells of home on top.
-
Night 30
Give them time

Night 100
Not right? Tell us
Any time inside the 100 nights. If it isn't right, we collect it free and refund every penny.
It doesn't need to be unused. Send it back slept-on, hair and all.
Every memory foam bed also carries the 5-year foam guarantee.
Before you decide
The questions we get asked most.
Something we haven't covered? Ask us
How do I know which size to get?
Measure nose to base of tail while they are lying down, then add 15–20cm. Where a dog falls between two sizes, go up: sprawlers need the length more than you would think. Every product page has a size guide built from that bed's own measurements, with breed examples.
What does 50kg/m³ actually mean?
It is how much foam is packed into every cubic metre. Density and firmness are not the same thing: a low-density foam can feel firm on day one and still collapse by month six. High-density foam keeps its structure under repeated weight, which is why a 50kg/m³ core is still supporting hips and elbows years later.
You'll find it in the orthopaedic beds. The fibre-filled nest beds are built for softness instead, and each product page says which is which.
Can I actually wash it?
On most of the range, yes: properly, not just spot-clean. Covers zip off and go straight in the machine at 30°C, and on the orthopaedic beds a waterproof inner liner keeps wet coats, muddy paws and accidents away from the foam.
One exception worth knowing before you buy: waterproof-fabric beds are wiped clean rather than washed with detergent, because detergent strips the coating off the fabric. Every product page says which applies.
How quickly will it arrive?
Orders go out on working days, tracked from the moment they leave us. Order by 3pm on a dispatch day and it goes the same day; most then arrive within 1–3 working days. Tracking comes by email as soon as it's on its way.
Delivery is free on UK orders over £40. Below that, the delivery charge is shown at checkout before you pay.
What if my dog just won't use it?
Then it comes back. Let your dog sleep on it for up to 100 nights. If it isn't right, we collect it free and refund every penny. Just tell us inside that window. It doesn't need to be unused: send it back slept-on, hair and all. Full terms are in our returns policy.
What does the 5-year guarantee cover?
The foam. Every memory foam bed carries a 5-year guarantee on its core: if it loses its structure under normal use in that time, which is the failure that ends most dog beds, we'll replace it. Covers, zips and liners are wearing parts and sit outside it, and the fibre-filled nest beds are built for softness rather than covered by the foam guarantee. Full terms are in our returns policy.
Will it help a dog with arthritis or stiff hips?
A supportive bed spreads their weight so pressure isn't concentrated on hips, elbows and shoulders, which is what makes lying down and getting back up harder for a dog with joint wear. But a bed is not a treatment and it won't replace veterinary care, so please keep talking to your vet. What it can change is the surface they spend twelve to fourteen hours a day on.
