About XL & XXL Dog Beds

The Great Dane with their back legs on the kitchen tiles. The mastiff whose head hangs off the end. A giant breed on a bed built for something smaller is a compromise you have both got used to. They will never complain about it, which is exactly why it's worth fixing. Most of these extra large dog beds list their size in centimetres, and where one does not, ask us before ordering, because the label alone won't tell you much.

Why an XL dog bed label isn't enough

An XL on one bed is 90 × 70cm. On another, the Extra Large is 140 × 100cm. Both are labelled honestly; they're just different beds. So ignore the letters and compare three numbers: your dog's length lying on their side, nose to base of tail, plus 15 to 20cm; the bed's outside footprint; and how much of that footprint the bolsters take. An open mattress gives you all of it. A four-sided bolster bed gives you noticeably less. If your dog is labrador-sized rather than giant, our large dog beds may be all you need.

The genuinely big ones

  • If they lean but find climbing hard: Mardale and Longsleddale, 132 × 104cm and 20cm deep, memory foam over an egg-crate layer, three bolstered sides and an open front.
  • If they want walls all round: Burnmoor, 132 × 104cm and 20cm deep, bolstered on all four sides with a lowered front section and a waterproof liner around the foam.
  • If they like their back covered and the room in view: Bowfell, 122 × 91cm and 18cm deep, with an L-shaped bolster and two sides left open.
  • If they sprawl: Ambleside Extra Large, 140 × 100cm with foam to every edge and no walls at all.
  • If they want a sofa of their own: Grasmere XXL, 135 × 100cm, memory foam with three cushioned arms and an open front. More shapes are among our dog sofa beds.

What a heavy dog needs underneath

Weight is what separates XL from merely large. A heavy dog flattens a thin layer and ends up lying on the floor through the fabric. Look for depth (the 20cm XXL beds, or Ennerdale at 24cm), layered foam rather than loose filling, and an entry low enough that they walk on rather than climb. A waterproof liner, where fitted, keeps wet coats and accidents off the core. If your dog has joint problems, a bed is comfort, not treatment, so keep talking to your vet.

Try an XL dog bed for 100 nights

With a bed this size, seeing it in your room matters as much as seeing them on it. Nearly every bed here comes with the 100-night sleep trial: within 100 nights, if it isn't right, we arrange free UK mainland collection and a full refund. One trial per household; damage and other exclusions apply. The exception is the Rydal Personalised bed, made to order with your dog's name, which is excluded from the trial and from change-of-mind returns; your full legal rights still apply if it arrives faulty. Free standard UK delivery on orders over £40.

XL dog bed questions

What size bed for a Great Dane or a Newfoundland?

Measure them lying on their side, add 15 to 20cm, and compare with the usable space. The largest beds here are 132 × 104cm (Mardale, Longsleddale, Burnmoor), 135 × 100cm (Grasmere XXL), 140 × 100cm (Ambleside Extra Large) and 145 × 115cm (Rydal Personalised 3XL). Still unsure? Message us their breed and weight and we will tell you honestly which fits.

Will an XXL bed fit in my room?

Measure the floor as carefully as the dog. On a bolstered bed, the outside size is what sits on your floor, even though they lie inside the bolsters.

Is there an XL bed that's easy to step into?

Yes. Burnmoor has a lowered front section and Easedale XL a lowered entry, Mardale and Longsleddale leave the front open, and Ambleside has no walls at all.

Torn between two big beds? The Bed Finder settles it from how they sleep.

The 100-night trial

Try it for 100 nights.
At our risk, not yours.

Tell us how they get on. If it isn't right, we collect it free and refund every penny.

  1. Night 1

    It arrives

Put it where they already sleep, with a blanket that smells of home on top.

  2. Night 30

    Give them time

Plenty of dogs claim a new bed the first evening. Some take a fortnight and a familiar blanket on top. Both are normal.

  3. Night 100

    Not right? Tell us

Any time inside the 100 nights. If it isn't right, we collect it free and refund every penny.

It doesn't need to be unused. Send it back slept-on, hair and all.

Every memory foam bed also carries the 5-year foam guarantee.

Before you decide

The questions we get asked most.

Something we haven't covered? Ask us

How do I know which size to get?

Measure nose to base of tail while they are lying down, then add 15–20cm. Where a dog falls between two sizes, go up: sprawlers need the length more than you would think. Every product page has a size guide built from that bed's own measurements, with breed examples.

What does 50kg/m³ actually mean?

It is how much foam is packed into every cubic metre. Density and firmness are not the same thing: a low-density foam can feel firm on day one and still collapse by month six. High-density foam keeps its structure under repeated weight, which is why a 50kg/m³ core is still supporting hips and elbows years later.

You'll find it in the orthopaedic beds. The fibre-filled nest beds are built for softness instead, and each product page says which is which.

Can I actually wash it?

On most of the range, yes: properly, not just spot-clean. Covers zip off and go straight in the machine at 30°C, and on the orthopaedic beds a waterproof inner liner keeps wet coats, muddy paws and accidents away from the foam.

One exception worth knowing before you buy: waterproof-fabric beds are wiped clean rather than washed with detergent, because detergent strips the coating off the fabric. Every product page says which applies.

How quickly will it arrive?

Orders go out on working days, tracked from the moment they leave us. Order by 3pm on a dispatch day and it goes the same day; most then arrive within 1–3 working days. Tracking comes by email as soon as it's on its way.

Delivery is free on UK orders over £40. Below that, the delivery charge is shown at checkout before you pay.

What if my dog just won't use it?

Then it comes back. Let your dog sleep on it for up to 100 nights. If it isn't right, we collect it free and refund every penny. Just tell us inside that window. It doesn't need to be unused: send it back slept-on, hair and all. Full terms are in our returns policy.

What does the 5-year guarantee cover?

The foam. Every memory foam bed carries a 5-year guarantee on its core: if it loses its structure under normal use in that time, which is the failure that ends most dog beds, we'll replace it. Covers, zips and liners are wearing parts and sit outside it, and the fibre-filled nest beds are built for softness rather than covered by the foam guarantee. Full terms are in our returns policy.

Will it help a dog with arthritis or stiff hips?

A supportive bed spreads their weight so pressure isn't concentrated on hips, elbows and shoulders, which is what makes lying down and getting back up harder for a dog with joint wear. But a bed is not a treatment and it won't replace veterinary care, so please keep talking to your vet. What it can change is the surface they spend twelve to fourteen hours a day on.
