About Dog Beds
Before you choose between dog beds, watch how yours settles tonight. The tight curl with a nose under the tail. The chin hooked over the sofa arm. The full-length sprawl across the kitchen floor. That habit tells you more about the right bed than any photograph, and most beds here are shaped around one of them.
Start with how they sleep
- If they curl up tight, choose walls. A dog who tucks in and presses their spine against the nearest edge tends to ignore a flat mat. Nest and donut beds give them sides all the way round.
- If they lean on things, choose an edge. When their chin is always resting on something, bolster beds and dog sofas put a raised, cushioned edge on one, two, three or four sides.
- If they sprawl, choose surface. On a walled bed their back legs end up on the floor. A dog mattress lets them step on from any side and stretch the whole length.
Then decide what goes underneath
Fibre filling, used in nests such as Rydal and Wensleydale, is soft and yielding, but it shifts and flattens with use. Foam holds its shape under weight. Memory foam contours to the dog lying on it, and profiled egg-crate foam spreads their weight rather than compressing flat. If they have started to hesitate at the edge of the bed, look at our orthopaedic dog beds, several of which leave the front open or drop it low so there is nothing to climb. A bed is for comfort, not a treatment, so if your dog is in pain please keep talking to your vet.
Size it from the sleeping area
Measure your dog lying on their side, nose to base of tail, and add 15 to 20cm. On walled beds the sides take up part of the listed footprint: the Loweswater XL is 90 × 70cm outside but 72 × 55cm to lie on. Between two sizes, size up. If the bed is going in a crate or a car boot, measure the floor it has to lie on, not the outside of the crate.
Our dog beds: the 100-night trial, and two exceptions
No photo can tell you whether they will actually sleep on it. Your floor can. Most beds here come with a 100-night trial from delivery: if it is not right, we arrange free UK mainland collection and a full refund (one trial per household; damage and other exclusions apply). Two exceptions. Personalised beds, such as Rydal Personalised, are made to order, so they are excluded from the trial and from change-of-mind returns, though your full legal rights apply if one arrives faulty, damaged or not as described. The Whinlatter car seat is a travel accessory, so check its returns eligibility first. Where a memory foam bed also carries a 5-year no-flatten guarantee on its foam core, its product page says so. The trial page has the full terms.
Questions owners ask
Is UK delivery free?
Standard UK delivery is free on orders over £40, and every dog bed here is priced above that. Check the product page for delivery timings and any product-specific lead time before you order; our delivery and returns page covers the rest.
Can I wash the covers?
On most beds the cover comes off, and many wash at 30°C. Follow the sewn-in label, air-dry fully, and never wash or soak the foam. Check coated wipe-clean fabrics against their label before any machine wash, and keep Thirlmere's structured felt out of the machine.
Do you have beds for very large dogs?
Yes. Mardale, Longsleddale and Burnmoor are 132 × 104cm and 20cm deep, and Brotherswater's raised mesh deck is 150 × 95cm.
Still not sure? The Bed Finder asks how they sleep first, then narrows the range to one bed.
The 100-night trial
Try it for 100 nights.
At our risk, not yours.
Tell us how they get on. If it isn't right, we collect it free and refund every penny.
-
Night 1
It arrives
Put it where they already sleep, with a blanket that smells of home on top.
-
Night 30
Give them time
Plenty of dogs claim a new bed the first evening. Some take a fortnight and a familiar blanket on top. Both are normal.
-
Night 100
Not right? Tell us
Any time inside the 100 nights. If it isn't right, we collect it free and refund every penny.
It doesn't need to be unused. Send it back slept-on, hair and all.
Every memory foam bed also carries the 5-year foam guarantee.
Before you decide
The questions we get asked most.
Something we haven't covered? Ask us
How do I know which size to get?
Measure nose to base of tail while they are lying down, then add 15–20cm. Where a dog falls between two sizes, go up: sprawlers need the length more than you would think. Every product page has a size guide built from that bed's own measurements, with breed examples.
What does 50kg/m³ actually mean?
It is how much foam is packed into every cubic metre. Density and firmness are not the same thing: a low-density foam can feel firm on day one and still collapse by month six. High-density foam keeps its structure under repeated weight, which is why a 50kg/m³ core is still supporting hips and elbows years later.
You'll find it in the orthopaedic beds. The fibre-filled nest beds are built for softness instead, and each product page says which is which.
Can I actually wash it?
On most of the range, yes: properly, not just spot-clean. Covers zip off and go straight in the machine at 30°C, and on the orthopaedic beds a waterproof inner liner keeps wet coats, muddy paws and accidents away from the foam.
One exception worth knowing before you buy: waterproof-fabric beds are wiped clean rather than washed with detergent, because detergent strips the coating off the fabric. Every product page says which applies.
How quickly will it arrive?
Orders go out on working days, tracked from the moment they leave us. Order by 3pm on a dispatch day and it goes the same day; most then arrive within 1–3 working days. Tracking comes by email as soon as it's on its way.
Delivery is free on UK orders over £40. Below that, the delivery charge is shown at checkout before you pay.
What if my dog just won't use it?
Then it comes back. Let your dog sleep on it for up to 100 nights. If it isn't right, we collect it free and refund every penny. Just tell us inside that window. It doesn't need to be unused: send it back slept-on, hair and all. Full terms are in our returns policy.
What does the 5-year guarantee cover?
The foam. Every memory foam bed carries a 5-year guarantee on its core: if it loses its structure under normal use in that time, which is the failure that ends most dog beds, we'll replace it. Covers, zips and liners are wearing parts and sit outside it, and the fibre-filled nest beds are built for softness rather than covered by the foam guarantee. Full terms are in our returns policy.
Will it help a dog with arthritis or stiff hips?
A supportive bed spreads their weight so pressure isn't concentrated on hips, elbows and shoulders, which is what makes lying down and getting back up harder for a dog with joint wear. But a bed is not a treatment and it won't replace veterinary care, so please keep talking to your vet. What it can change is the surface they spend twelve to fourteen hours a day on.
