Our Dachshund has a history of spinal issues, so stepping over raised edges was a risk. The Ambleside edge-to-edge bed is completely flat. She walks straight on and the memory foam supports her long spine evenly without pressure points.
For the dog who wedges themselves into the sofa corner.
Rydal is a high-sided nest dog bed for dogs up to 50kg, with cushioned walls around the whole resting area, a fleece sleeping finish, soft fibre filling and a removable zipped cover. Five sizes, Small, Medium, Large, XL and XXL, in Green, Grey or Bronze.
You know where they are before you look. Pushed into the corner of the sofa, spine against the back cushion, nose tucked under a leg, taking up as little room as a dog can. The bed you bought them is on the floor beside the sofa, open and flat and empty. It is not that they do not like beds. It is that an open bed has nothing to press against, and this is a dog who wants something at their back.
It is easy to tell yourself they just prefer the sofa. Some dogs do. But the surface they spend most of the day and all of the night on is the one thing about their winter you can change this week. Rydal is built for a walls dog: cushioned sides that run all the way round the resting area, high enough to lean into, with soft fleece in the middle to burrow down into on a cold night. You noticed the corner. This is the bed that answers it.

What is inside, layer by layer
Start where your dog lies. The sleeping finish is fleece, which is soft against a coat and warm to settle onto, and it is the part they feel first on a cold night. Under the fleece is soft polyester fibre filling. Fibre is yielding by design: it gives under them and settles round the shape of a curled dog rather than holding them up on a firm block. That is what makes Rydal a bed to burrow into rather than a platform to lie on.
Around the resting area run the walls. They are cushioned rather than rigid, and they go the whole way round rather than stopping at a gap or dropping to a low rim at the front. The height is the point. A wall that is high enough to lean into gives a curled dog something along their spine and under their chin whichever way they turn, which is exactly what the sofa corner was giving them. Over all of it is a zipped cover. The zip is there so the cover comes off for washing and goes back on afterwards, rather than the bed staying grubby because there is no way to clean it.
What changes for them
-
Something at their back: The walls run all the way round, so wherever they turn there is a side to press into.
-
A warm first contact: Fleece where they lie, instead of a cold cover or a cold floor.
-
A bed that gives: Soft fibre filling settles round a curled dog rather than pushing back.
-
A place for their head: Walls high enough to rest a chin on the edge, which is how a lot of curled sleepers like to lie.
-
A cover you can keep clean: It unzips, washes and goes back on.
Best for: Dogs up to 50kg who curl up tight, sleep with their head on the edge, and go looking for walls when the temperature drops.
Not for: Dogs who stretch out flat. Walls all the way round get in the way of a sprawler, and they will lie next to it instead. Dogs who want a firm surface under them: the fibre filling is soft by design, and our memory foam beds are the better choice. Dogs who dig at or chew bedding: if that is your dog, message us first and we will tell you honestly which bed stands a chance.
Why it costs what it costs
The money went on the walls and the fleece. Cushioned sides that run the whole way round take more filling and more sewing than a flat pad with a strip of rim, and fleece where they lie is a finish a plain-covered bed does not have. Those are the two things a walls dog actually uses, and they are the two things a cheaper nest tends to cut back on: a rim too low to lean into, a lining that goes thin by spring. A £30 bed that is flat by spring is not the cheaper option. You just buy it twice.
Every night between now and spring that they spend wedged into the sofa is a night they are making do. Rydal starts at £79 for the Small and goes up to £139 for the XXL, and it is the simplest way to find out whether your dog is a walls dog before you spend more on anything else. If they do not settle into it, you have 100 nights to say so, and we collect it free from the UK mainland and refund you in full.

We have not published the outside measurements for Rydal on this page, and we would rather say so than guess. What we can tell you is how a nest is sized. The high walls take up a large part of the outside footprint, so a nest is not measured the way a flat mattress is. Measure your dog curled up, the way they sleep in the sofa corner, rather than stretched out on their side. A dog who measures 70cm lying on their side will curl to a good deal less than that, and it is the curled measurement that has to fit inside the walls. If you are between sizes, size up: a curled dog with room to spare settles, a curled dog pressed against both walls does not. Message us their breed and weight and we will tell you honestly which size fits.
The first week
Put Rydal where they already sleep, which for a walls dog usually means right beside the sofa corner they have claimed. Drop in a blanket that smells of home, or the jumper you wore yesterday. Then leave it alone. Do not lift them into it or hold them there, because a dog who is put into a bed learns that the bed is where they get put, not where they choose to go. Some dogs claim it the first night. Some circle it for a fortnight and then move in one evening as if it had always been theirs. A few never do, and the 100 nights are there for them.
Straight answers
Which size should I choose?
Measure your dog curled up rather than stretched out, because the walls take a large part of the outside footprint. If you land between two sizes, take the bigger one. If you are not sure, message us their breed and weight and we will tell you honestly which size fits.
How do I wash it?
Unzip the cover, wash it following the sewn-in care label, and air-dry it fully before you put it back on. We have not published a wash temperature for the Rydal cover on this page, so go by the label.
How firm is it, and will it go flat?
Rydal is soft. The filling is polyester fibre, yielding rather than firm, because it is a bed to burrow into. We do not make a flattening guarantee on fibre, and we would rather tell you that than imply one. If your dog wants a firm surface under them, our memory foam beds are the better choice.
What if they ignore it?
Give it the first week as described above. If they still have not taken to it, you have 100 nights from delivery to tell us. We arrange free UK mainland collection and refund you in full.
When will it arrive?
You will see the dates above the button before you order. Standard UK delivery is free on every order.
What does this page not tell me?
The outside measurements for each size. We would rather leave the table blank than guess, so if you need the numbers, message us and we will send them for the size you are looking at.
Which colour should I pick?
Green, Grey or Bronze, and the price is the same whichever you choose. Pick the one that suits the room it is going in, because this is a bed that will sit in plain view all winter.
