Braithwaite Orthopaedic Chaise Bolster Dog Bed for Dogs up to 20kg

No climb in. One open corner to walk straight onto egg-crate foam.

Edge to edge foam means our dog uses the whole bed. Very good.

Our Dachshund has a history of spinal issues, so stepping over raised edges was a risk. The Ambleside edge-to-edge bed is completely flat. She walks straight on and the memory foam supports her long spine evenly without pressure points.

A cold night, one open corner, fleece to land on.

Braithwaite is an orthopaedic chaise dog bed in one size for small and medium dogs up to 20kg, with a profiled egg-crate foam core, a bolstered perimeter with one open chaise corner, a fleece sleeping surface and a waterproof lining around the foam.

It is late, the heating has clicked off, and they come in from the garden with wet paws and a cold coat. They look at their bed, which has a wall to get over, and then they look at the sofa. You know which one they pick. What they want on a night like that is simple: a way in that takes no effort, something soft under them straight away, and an edge to tuck a back or a chin against once they are down.

You cannot change the weather or the tiles. The surface they spend most of the day and all of the night on is the thing you can change this week. Braithwaite is built around one open corner. The bolster runs round the perimeter for leaning, one corner is cut away so they walk straight in, and the surface they land on is fleece, which is the part they will care about in January. Choosing it is a small decision that says they do not have to make do.

    At a glance

    • Type: Orthopaedic chaise dog bed with a bolstered perimeter and one open corner.
    • Core: Profiled egg-crate foam.
    • Surface: Fleece sleeping surface.
    • Protection: Waterproof lining around the foam.
    • Way in: One open chaise corner. No climb in.
    • Size: One size, suited to small and medium dogs up to 20kg.
    • Care: Follow the sewn-in care label on the cover. Wipe the lining. Never wash or soak the foam.
    • Trial: 100 nights at home, with free UK mainland collection if it is not right.

What is inside, layer by layer

Start at the top, where they lie. The sleeping surface is fleece. It is the first thing they feel on a cold night and the part that decides whether they stay down or get up again.

Under the fleece sits a waterproof lining that wraps around the foam. Its job is simple. Wet coats, muddy paws and the occasional accident stop at the lining and wipe off, instead of soaking into the core. That is the layer that keeps a bed in use after a bad night rather than finished by it.

Under the lining is the core, a profiled egg-crate foam. The profile is the point. The surface of the foam is shaped rather than cut flat, and the shape spreads their weight across the foam instead of letting it press into one spot, so the foam does not compress flat under them.

Around the edge runs the bolster, almost all the way round. It gives them something to lean a back into or rest a chin on, which is how a dog who sleeps with their head on the edge likes to lie. At one corner the bolster stops. That gap is the chaise entry: nothing to climb, nothing to step over, a straight walk in and a drop down.

    What changes for them

    • No climb in: The open corner means they walk straight in and drop down, on a cold night or a frosty morning.
    • Warm where it counts: Fleece is the layer they lie on, not a layer hidden underneath something else.
    • Nothing packs down under them: Profiled egg-crate foam spreads their weight rather than compressing flat.
    • A wet coat does not end the bed: The waterproof lining around the foam keeps moisture off the core.
    • Somewhere to lean: A bolster almost all the way round, for a back or a chin.

Best for: Small and medium dogs up to 20kg who sleep with their head on the edge and want an easy way in.

Not for: Dogs over 20kg. Dogs who sleep stretched flat out and want open space on every side, because the bolster runs almost all the way round. Dogs who dig at or chew bedding. If that is your dog, message us first and we will tell you honestly which bed stands a chance.

Why it costs what it costs

The money went on two things. The first is the waterproof lining around the foam. It is the part that decides whether this is a one-accident bed or a bed that is still in use next winter, and it is the first thing cut at lower prices. The second is the profiled egg-crate foam core, which is the next thing cut. A bed without either looks the same in a photo. It does not feel the same in February, and it does not come through the first wet week the same way.

Waiting has a cost too. Every night between now and spring on a flat bed or a cold floor is a night they do not get back, and a cheap bed that is flat by spring is not the cheaper option, you just buy it twice. Braithwaite is £175 for one bed that does the whole job. You are not gambling that either. You have 100 nights at home to decide, and if they do not settle into it we collect it free from the UK mainland and refund you in full.

    Size and fit

    Size Suits
One size Small and medium dogs up to 20kg

Braithwaite comes in one size, and this page does not list a centimetre footprint for it, so fit comes down to your dog rather than a table. The bolstered perimeter takes up part of the outside footprint, and the sleeping area is the space inside it. Measure your dog curled up as well as stretched out, nose to base of tail, because a dog who sleeps with their head on the edge uses a bed curled. A dog who measures 60cm lying on their side but sleeps in a ball needs far less room than that number suggests, so tell us both figures. Message us their breed and weight and we will tell you honestly whether it fits before you order.

    The first week

Put it where they already sleep, not where you would like them to sleep. Lay a blanket that smells of home over the fleece for the first few nights and turn the open corner towards the room so they can see the way in. Do not lift them onto it or coax them. Let them find it. Some dogs claim a new bed the first night. Some walk past it for a fortnight and then never leave it. If yours is still choosing the floor after a couple of weeks, move the bed to the spot they keep going back to and try again. The 100 nights are there for the ones who never do.

    Straight answers

    Which size do I need?

There is one size, suited to small and medium dogs up to 20kg. Measure your dog lying on their side, nose to base of tail, and again curled up, then message us their breed and weight and we will tell you honestly whether it fits.

    What are the exact measurements?

We do not list a centimetre footprint for Braithwaite on this page. It is one size, made for small and medium dogs, and the bolster takes part of the outside footprint. If you want to be sure before you order, message us their breed and weight and we will tell you honestly whether it fits.

    How do I wash it?

Follow the sewn-in care label on the cover. The lining underneath wipes clean. Air-dry everything fully before refitting, and never wash or soak the foam.

    Will it go flat?

The core is profiled egg-crate foam, and the profile is there to spread their weight across the foam rather than let it compress flat under them. We do not put a firmness number on it. If it is not right for your dog, you have 100 nights to tell us.

    Is it waterproof?

The lining around the foam is waterproof. The fleece on top is a sleeping surface, so a wet dog will leave the fleece damp, but the foam underneath stays dry and the lining wipes clean.

My dog is over 20kg. Will it still work?

Braithwaite is made for small and medium dogs up to 20kg, and we would rather tell you that now than after it arrives. Message us their breed and weight and we will point you at the right bed instead.

    What if they ignore it?

Some dogs claim a new bed the first night, some take a fortnight. Put it where they already sleep, with a blanket that smells of home on top, and leave them to it. If it still is not theirs inside 100 nights, we collect it free from the UK mainland and refund you in full.

    When will it arrive?

You will see the dates above the button before you order.

    Everyday care

Follow the sewn-in care label on the cover. Wipe the lining. Air-dry fully before refitting. Never wash or soak the foam.

If your dog is in pain, recovering or finding it hard to move, speak to your vet about the right resting surface. A bed is for comfort. It is not a treatment.

    100 nights to decide

100 nights is longer than a whole winter. Plenty of time to know.

Try it at home for 100 nights from delivery. If it is not right, we arrange free UK mainland collection and a full refund. One trial per household; damage and other exclusions apply. Read the full returns and guarantee terms.

Free standard UK delivery on every order. Check delivery timings and any product-specific lead time.

Check the fit with us and give them somewhere soft to drop into on cold nights.

Processing: Orders are packed within 1-2 business days.

    Guarantee

The 5-year foam guarantee covers the memory foam core of every PawLunova memory foam bed. If the core loses its shape under normal domestic use within 5 years, we replace it. Whether this bed is covered is shown in the "Included with this bed" list above.

Covers, zips, liners, waterproof layers, bolsters, fibre filling and non-slip bases are wearing parts and aren't included. Nor is damage from chewing, scratching, tearing or accidents, foam damaged by liquid (including urine) or by washing, softening that recovers when the bed is empty, or commercial use.

Braithwaite Orthopaedic Chaise Dog Bed - Pawlunova
    Why the Braithwaite

What the Braithwaite does for them.

No climb in. A bolstered surround with one open corner to walk straight in, egg-crate foam beneath.

    • Best for: Small and medium dogs.
    • Low step-in. Easy in, easy out for stiff legs.
    • Waterproof inner liner between cover and foam.
    • 5-year guarantee on the foam core.
    • Made in Yorkshire.
    Before you add it

Is the Braithwaite right for your dog?

Honest answers now beat a return later. Here's who this bed is for, and who it isn't.

    Yes, if

    • They've started taking a moment to get up in the morning.
    • They've started choosing the floor over their old bed, or circling and resettling on it.
    • You've already paid for a bed that went flat, and you'd rather not do it twice.
    • Made with small and medium dogs in mind.
    • They struggle to lift a paw over a high side. This one is a low step-in.

    Think twice if

    • They chew beds. Nothing on this site is chew-proof, and covers sit outside the guarantee.
    • You're guessing the size. Don't: measure them lying down against the size cards above, or send us a photo.

    Straight answers

    • A bed is for comfort, not a treatment. If they're in pain, your vet comes first, and we'll never tell you otherwise.
    • Every size is in centimetres. Where a measurement is the outside rather than the sleeping area, the page says so.
    • 100 nights to decide, slept on. If it isn't right, tell us and it comes back, collected free from the UK mainland, refunded in full.
    • The foam core is guaranteed for 5 years. Covers, zips and liners wear with use and sit outside it.
The question every dog bed gets asked

    Will it go flat?

Fair question, because it's how most dog beds end: plump in the shop, flat by spring, and a dog sleeping on the floor with a cover over it. So here is what's actually inside the Braithwaite, and what we'll do if it ever lets you down.

    • Egg-crate foam. Foam, not loose filling that packs down.
    • 5-year foam guarantee. If the foam loses its structure under normal use inside 5 years, we replace the foam. Covers, zips and liners wear with use and sit outside it.
    • 100 nights to find out for yourself. Slept on, hair and all. If it isn't right, it comes back.
    The hand test, tonight

Press a flat hand into the middle of their current bed, where they lie. If you can feel the floor through it, so can their hips and elbows. Do the same on the Braithwaite whenever you like: if the foam ever fails that test under normal use inside the guarantee, that's exactly what the guarantee is for.

Inside the Braithwaite, top to bottom

    1. Cover

Follow the care label sewn into it.

    2. Waterproof inner liner

Sits between cover and core, so a wet coat or an accident stops before the foam.

    3. Egg-crate foam

The part the 5-year guarantee covers.

    Wet coats, accidents and washing

The bit nobody mentions until February.

A bed that can't be washed is a bed you'll throw away. Here's how the Braithwaite stays a bed you'd let in the living room.

    Washing it

Follow the care label sewn into the cover. Foam is never machine washed. Care guide.

    Accidents and wet dogs

A waterproof inner liner sits between cover and core, so a wet coat or an accident stops before the foam. Wipe or wash the liner; it comes off too.

One on the bed, one in the wash

Ask us about a spare cover before you order. A second cover means the bed is never out of action on wash day.

If it arrives rolled or vacuum-packed, unroll it somewhere ventilated and give it a few hours to come back to full depth before they try it.

    The 100-night trial

100 nights to be sure. At our risk, not yours.

Nobody expects a trial on a dog bed. We think it's the only honest way to sell one, because a bed only proves itself at 2am.

    1. Night 1

      It arrives

Put it where they already sleep, with a blanket that smells of home on top.

    2. Night 50

      Give them time

Plenty of dogs claim a new bed the first evening. Some take a fortnight. Both are normal, and you've got 100.

    3. Night 100

      Not right? Tell us

Any time inside the 100 nights. We collect it free from the UK mainland and refund every penny.

It doesn't need to be unused. Send it back slept on, hair and all.

A few products aren't part of the trial. Where that's the case, the product page says so before you buy.

    What it really costs

About a few pence a night.

Dogs spend twelve to fourteen hours a day lying down. Spread over the 5 years the foam is guaranteed for, the Braithwaite works out at pennies a night. Worth comparing with a bed that's flat by spring, and the one you buy to replace it.

Worked out as the Braithwaite at £175, divided by 5 years of nights (1825). Rounded up, never down.

    The same money, elsewhere

    Before you add it

Questions about this bed, in your words.

How do I know which size to get?

Measure nose to base of tail while they're lying down, then add about 20cm. Between two sizes? Go up. The size cards above list the sleeping area where we've measured it. Still unsure? Send us their breed and weight.

    What size for a Labrador?

Most adult Labradors need the Large or the XL, and a sprawler needs the bigger of the two. Measure them lying stretched out, nose to base of tail, add about 20cm, and compare with the sleeping area on the size cards. If that lands between two sizes, go up: a bed that's slightly too big is never the problem, one that's too small always is.

Will it actually be memory foam, or that egg-crate stuff?

The "What's inside" card above says exactly what's in this bed: the core type and, where we've measured it, the depth and the density. If it's memory foam over egg-crate foam, it says so. If it's fibre, it says so. We'd rather you knew now than in month three.

Our last one went flat in a month. How is this different?

Beds that go flat are usually loose fibre, or thin foam that bottoms out. This one is built on a foam core, listed above with its depth, and the core is guaranteed for 5 years: if it loses its structure under normal use, we replace the foam. Covers, zips and liners wear with use and sit outside the guarantee, which is why we'd rather you had a spare cover than a new bed.

What if my dog just won't use it?

Then it comes back. Put it where they already sleep, with a blanket that smells of home on top. If after a fortnight it still isn't right, tell us any time inside the 100 nights and we collect it free from the UK mainland and refund every penny.

He's not a 'bed dog'. He'd rather have the floor.

A dog who picks the kitchen floor over his bed has usually done the comparison: the floor is flatter and firmer than a bed that has bottomed out. Put the new one where he already sleeps, old blanket on top, and give him a fortnight. If he still won't, it comes back inside the 100 nights and you're refunded in full.

Will it help a dog with arthritis or stiff hips?

Foam spreads their weight so pressure isn't concentrated on hips, elbows and shoulders, and a low front means stepping in rather than climbing over. A bed is for comfort, not a treatment, so please keep talking to your vet.

She's started having the odd accident. Is it waterproof?

Where this bed has a waterproof inner liner, it's listed under "Why the bed" above, and the liner sits between cover and foam so an accident stops before the core. Where it doesn't, the cover comes off and washes and the care guide shows how to protect the foam. Either way, a second cover means one is always on the bed.

    Can I wash it?

Where the cover comes off, it washes following the care label sewn into it. Coated covers wipe clean. Foam is never machine washed. See the care guide.

Does it smell when it arrives?

Foam beds often arrive rolled or vacuum-packed. Unroll it somewhere ventilated and give it a few hours to come back to full depth before they try it. If anything about it isn't right once it has, that's what the 100 nights are for.

Can I really send something this big back?

Yes. Inside the 100 nights, tell us and we arrange collection free from the UK mainland, slept on, hair and all, and refund every penny. You don't need to find a box that fits.

It's a lot for a dog bed. Why?

Dogs spend twelve to fourteen hours a day lying down. Spread over the 5 years the foam is guaranteed for, it comes to the pennies-a-night figure above. Compare that with a bed that's flat by spring, and the one you buy to replace it, and the one after that.

    When will it arrive?

The dates for an order placed today are above the button. Own stock is dispatched in 1 to 2 working days and delivered 1 to 2 working days later. Free UK delivery.
