Our Dachshund has a history of spinal issues, so stepping over raised edges was a risk. The Ambleside edge-to-edge bed is completely flat. She walks straight on and the memory foam supports her long spine evenly without pressure points.
They have started taking a moment to get up.
Ambleside is an edge-to-edge memory foam dog mattress for dogs up to 70kg: a contouring memory foam top layer over a firmer foam base, with a zip-off cover, in Medium (82 × 70cm), Large (100 × 80cm) and Extra Large (140 × 100cm).
You see it most in the morning. You reach for the lead and there is a beat before they stand, a moment that was not there last year. You have noticed other things too: a shoulder on the cold tiles because the old bed is too small for them now, the shuffle from the edge to the middle in the night because the edge has nothing in it, the bed itself flat since last winter with the floor coming through. You keep meaning to sort it, and the week goes.
The surface they spend most of the day and all of the night on is the one thing about this you can change this week. Ambleside is built around a plain idea: foam to every edge, so there is no thin spot, no soft rim and no cold floor anywhere on it. Memory foam on top takes their shape. A firmer foam base underneath stops them sinking through to the floor. That is the whole mechanism, and the foam core is guaranteed against going flat for 5 years. Choosing it is deciding that the dog does not have to make do.

What is inside, layer by layer
Start at the top. The cover zips off, so it goes in the wash on its care label and back on. Under it is the memory foam top layer. This is the contouring layer. It takes the shape of whatever is lying on it, a hip, a shoulder, an elbow, rather than pushing back against it. Under that is the firmer foam base, and its job is the opposite. It does not give much, and that is the point. It stops a heavy dog sinking through the softer layer and meeting the floor. The two layers do different jobs, and the bed needs both.
Then the edges. Most cheap mattresses are a thin foam sheet floating in a bag. The edges have nothing in them, so a dog who lies down near one sinks through to the cold floor and shuffles to the middle. Ambleside runs foam right to all four sides. There are no thin spots and no soft rim, so every centimetre of the surface is sleeping space, and there is nothing to step over on the way onto it.
What changes for them
-
No cold floor coming through: The firmer base stops them sinking through the memory foam to the tiles.
-
The whole bed is the bed: Foam to all four edges, so a sprawler gets every centimetre and nobody rolls off a thin edge.
-
No climb, from any side: A level mattress they step onto from wherever they are standing.
-
Room to lie flat out: Three sizes up to 140 × 100cm, every centimetre of it usable.
-
A surface that takes their shape: The memory foam top contours to them rather than the other way round.
-
A cover that comes off: Zip-off, washed on the care label, air-dried in a day.
Best for: Side sleepers, sprawlers, older dogs who find walls a nuisance, and big dogs who never fit on a standard mattress.
Not for: Dogs who dig at or chew bedding. If that is your dog, message us first and we will tell you honestly which bed stands a chance. It is also not the bed for a dog who wants a rim to rest a chin on or a wall to press against. There is no rim on Ambleside, on purpose.
Why it costs what it costs
The money went on two things. Two layers of foam, a softer one and a firmer one doing different jobs, with foam running to all four edges instead of stopping short. And a cover that zips off, so mud and moulting do not end the bed: cover off, washed, back on. What those parts stop is the thin edge, the sink to the floor and the bed that is flat by spring. A £30 bed that is flat by spring is not the cheaper option. You just buy it twice. And every night between now and spring that you spend deciding is a night they spend on the floor, or on something that has become the floor with a layer of fabric over it.
The foam core carries a 5-year no-flatten guarantee. Across those five years the Medium works out at about 5p a night, and even the Extra Large is under 8p a night. Picture the first frosty morning: they are lying full length, nothing of them on the tiles, on a bed that is the same depth at the edge as it is in the middle. And you are not gambling the money: if they have not claimed it within 100 nights, we collect it free from the UK mainland and refund you in full, slept-on, hair and all.
Size and fit
| Size |
Dimensions (cm) |
| Medium |

| Large |
100 × 80 |
| Extra Large |
140 × 100 |
Measure your dog lying on their side, the way they actually sleep, from nose to base of tail. Add 15 to 20cm so they have room to shift. Every centimetre of Ambleside is usable sleeping area, so there is no allowance to make for a bolster. A dog who measures 70cm lying down wants 85 to 90cm of bed, which is the Large at 100 × 80cm. A dog who measures 100cm or more is into Extra Large territory. If they land between two sizes, go up; on a flat mattress a bigger bed is never wasted. Ambleside is for dogs up to 70kg. Not sure? Message us their breed and weight and we will tell you honestly which one fits.
The first week
Put it where they already sleep, not where you would like them to sleep. If that is the kitchen floor by the radiator, the mattress goes on the kitchen floor by the radiator. Lay a blanket or an old jumper that smells of home on top for the first few nights, so it is not a strange new object. Then leave it alone. Do not lift them onto it or call them over to it every time you walk past. Some dogs claim a new bed the first night. Some circle it for a fortnight and then one evening they are on it as if they always were. A few never do, and that is what the 100 nights are for.
Straight answers
Which size do I need?
Measure them lying on their side, nose to base of tail, and add 15 to 20cm. Medium is 82 × 70cm, Large is 100 × 80cm and Extra Large is 140 × 100cm. Between sizes, go up. If you are still not sure, message us their breed and weight and we will tell you which one.
How do I wash it?
Unzip the cover and wash it following the sewn-in care label, which gives the temperature. Air-dry it fully before you put it back on. Never wash or soak the foam itself. The cover washes and air-dries in a day.
Will it go flat, and how firm is it?
The foam core is guaranteed for 5 years against losing its shape under normal domestic use. If it does, we replace it. That is the difference between this and the fibre-filled beds that pack down to nothing by spring. On firmness, it is two layers: a contouring memory foam top that takes their shape, over a firmer base that holds them up off the floor. Soft where they touch it, firm underneath.
How thick is it?
We do not print a single depth here. Message us before you order and we will confirm the exact depth of the size you are choosing.
What if they ignore it?
Then it comes back. You have 100 nights from delivery. If they have not taken to it in that time, we arrange free UK mainland collection and refund you in full. One trial per household; damage and other exclusions apply.
When will it arrive?
You will see the dates above the button before you order. Standard UK delivery is free on every order.
Can I buy a spare cover?
Not yet. Message us and we will tell you the moment they are in. In the meantime the cover washes and air-dries in a day, so you are rarely without it for long.
Everyday care
Remove the cover and wash it following the sewn-in care label. Air-dry fully before refitting. Never wash or soak the foam.
If your dog is in pain, recovering or finding it hard to move, speak to your vet about the right resting surface. A bed is for comfort. It is not a treatment.
100 nights to decide. 5 years on the foam.
100 nights is longer than a whole winter. Plenty of time to know.
