How to Choose a Dog Bed That Lasts More Than a Year

Nearly every dog bed on sale in Britain describes itself as supportive, orthopaedic or premium. None of those words mean anything. Here are the six that do.

Buying a dog bed should be simple and it is not, because the industry has spent twenty years attaching medical sounding language to ordinary foam. "Orthopaedic" is not a regulated term. Anyone can print it on a label, and almost everyone does.

So ignore the copy and work through these six questions instead. It takes about four minutes and it rules out most of the market.

1. What is the foam density, in kg per cubic metre?

This is the whole game and it is the question that gets dodged.

Density is how much foam actually occupies the space, as opposed to air. It is not the same as thickness and it is not the same as firmness, and manufacturers rely heavily on people not knowing the difference. You can make thin, cheap foam feel firm on a shop floor. It will still collapse.

2. Is it big enough, measured properly?

The most common reason a good bed gets abandoned, and the easiest to avoid.

Measure your dog lying stretched on their side, nose to the base of the tail, then add 15cm to 20cm. That is the minimum internal sleeping length. Note the word internal: on a bolster bed, the raised rim is not sleeping space, and a bed advertised at 100cm can offer 75cm of usable surface.

3. Does the shape match how your dog sleeps?

Watch them for a week before you buy anything.

• Sleeps stretched out on their side: flat mattress. A rim is an obstacle, not a feature.
• Curls tightly, tucks into corners: bolster or nest. The contact is the point.
• Rests their chin on things: bolster, low profile.
• Does all three depending on the season: low bolster is the safe compromise.

Getting this wrong is worse than getting the price wrong. A £300 bed in the shape your dog dislikes is £300 of floor decoration.

4. Does the cover come off, and will it survive washing?

You will wash it weekly. Assume that from the start.

You want a full length zip, a cover that comes off without a fight, and a fabric rated for 30°C. Beds where the cover is stitched shut are a design failure, and beds that shrink in the wash are worse, because a shrunk cover will not go back over the foam and the bed is finished.

5. Is the warranty on the foam or on the fabric?

Read this bit carefully, because plenty of guarantees quietly cover only the parts that rarely fail.

The core is what you are paying for and the core is what should be covered. Ours carries a five year guarantee against flattening. A brand that will not warranty its core is telling you what it thinks of its core.

6. Can you send it back after your dog has slept on it?

This matters more than it sounds, because you cannot know whether a dog will use a bed until they have had it for a fortnight.

A fourteen day return window does not cover that. It puts you under time pressure exactly when the dog is still making up their mind. Look for a trial that expects the bed to be used, not one that requires it to be returned pristine, which is a return policy wearing a trial's coat.

1. Ask for the density in kg/m³. No number, no sale.
2. Measure your dog, add 20cm, check the internal dimensions.
3. Match the shape to how they actually sleep.
4. Removable cover, 30°C rated.
5. Warranty on the foam, not the fabric.
6. A trial long enough for your dog to decide.
