Why a dog sofa bed works when a flat bed doesn't

Watch where the head goes. Almost every dog hooks a chin over something before they properly settle the sofa arm, a cushion, the edge of a step. Raising the head slightly opens the airway and takes rotational strain off the neck and shoulder, which is why a dog offered a flat mattress will often drag a toy under their head rather than lie completely level.

A sofa bed gives them that edge deliberately. The bolsters do the head and back; the base does the hips and elbows for the hours they spend flat out between position changes. One bed, both halves of the night.

The difference between a sofa-shaped bed and an orthopaedic one

Most dog sofas on the market are shape without substance a good-looking frame around a bag of fibre that has collapsed by spring. Your dog gets the geometry they wanted for about eight weeks, then ends up lying in a dip with a bolster under their shoulder instead of their chin.

Everything in this collection has a memory foam core, so the sofa shape is still a sofa shape in year two. If softness rather than support is what you're after, the Ullswater four-sided bolster sofa is fibre-filled and sits outside this collection on purpose.

Which one for your dog

  • A dog who sleeps with their head on somethingthe Haweswater, cushioned armrests on a wide lounge base.
  • A dog who needs support and a headrest in onethe Windsor, orthopaedic bolsters, four colourways.
  • A large dog who overhangs everythingthe Grasmere, up to 135 × 100cm with a walk-in front.
  • A giant breedthe Mardale XXL, three walls and an open front, because a Dane walks into a bed rather than stepping over into it.

How to actually move a dog off your sofa

Buying the bed is the easy part. Three things decide whether they use it:

  • Put it where the sofa is. Not across the room. They chose that spot for the sightline as much as the cushion.
  • Add something that already smells of home  an unwashed throw, a worn t-shirt  for the first week.
  • Give it a fortnight. Dogs commit to a new surface slowly, and a firm supportive base feels wrong on night one and right by night ten.

Getting the size right

Measure your dog nose to base of tail while they're lying stretched out, add 15–20cm, then allow for the bolsters taking part of that footprint. Sofa beds fail on size more than on anything else  the dog overhangs, the bolster ends up under a shoulder, and they go back to yours within a week. Where your dog falls between two sizes, size up.

Questions owners ask

Will an orthopaedic sofa bed help my dog's arthritis?
It changes the surface they spend fourteen hours a day on, which is a real part of daily comfort for a dog with worn joints. It is not a treatment and doesn't replace veterinary care, so keep your vet in the conversation.

My dog is a sprawler. Do the bolsters get in the way?
Take a size up and they won't. If your dog never rests their head on anything and lies flat in the middle of the floor, a flat memory foam mattress will suit them better than a sofa shape.

The part you cannot see

What 50kg/m³ actually means.

Every memory foam bed on this page runs on the same core. Density is the weight of a cubic metre of foam, and it is not the same thing as firmness — which is why a cheap bed can feel solid in the shop and still be flat by March.

Most dog beds use shredded offcuts or foam somewhere between 18 and 25kg/m³. Ours is 50. It is the reason the guarantee is on the foam rather than on the stitching.

4 · Non-slip baseStays put on wood and tile, so the bed does not travel across the kitchen.

Before you decide

The questions we get asked most.

Measure nose to base of tail while they are lying down, then add 15–20cm. Where a dog falls between two sizes, go up. The size and firmness guide has it breed by breed, and the 100-night trial covers you if it is still wrong.

It is how much foam is packed into a cubic metre. Density and firmness are different things — low-density foam can feel firm in week one and be flat by month six. High-density foam keeps its structure under a dog getting on and off it all day, which is why the guarantee is on the foam.

These beds spread weight so pressure is not concentrated on hips, elbows and shoulders — the part that makes lying down and getting up harder as joints wear. A bed is not a treatment and will not replace veterinary care, so keep talking to your vet.

Yes, properly — not spot-clean only. The cover unzips and goes in the machine at 30°C, over a waterproof liner that keeps everything off the foam.

UK delivery is free on every order, with no minimum spend. Standard is 3 to 5 working days; Express is £6.99 at checkout if you want it sooner. You get tracking as soon as it leaves us.

Then it goes back and you are not out of pocket. Get in touch inside the 100 nights and we will arrange the return and refund you. Full terms in the returns policy.

Fourteen hours a day, on the same surface.

It is worth getting that surface right. Three questions and we will tell you which of ours fits.
